The world is full of different and colorful cultures. But, as of the moment, it’s plunged in such political divisiveness that almost everyone is backed up into their own corners. Designer Kozaburo Akasaka believes, however, that fashion and clothing should transcend such barriers, if not through conversation, then through spiritual connection. His message of love, unity, and peace was loud and clear on his Spring 2019 collection, which features an interplay of various cultures and ideas all cohesive and connected. East meets West when various American-style silhouettes were paired with Asian prints and motifs, and vice versa. A harem pants-like pair of trousers, for example, were made in a decidedly stark navy blue hue—a color more often used in Western tailoring than Eastern costumery. The spiritual aspect came in a cloudy and artistic print in various pieces, painted by a Buddhist monk from Kyoto, Japan. Soft, light, and airy, such imagery provided the right amount of ease to such an eclectic yet harmonized collection. As this is only his second collection, it’s clear that there’s still a lot to expect from this LVMH Prize winner!
