Alchemist used to be a ‘drops’ kind of brand, having collaborations with all sorts of artists, from Kpop star G-Dragon to the late great architect Zaha Hadid. Now, however, Roma Cohen has established his company as a full-blown ready-to-wear label offering luxury streetwear. For his spring 2019 menswear collection, he gave equal attention to both luxury and streetwear, playing with high-quality textiles and transforming them into staple streetwear pieces. A baroque-printed fabric, for example, was cut into a softly-tailored robe-like jacket paired with shredded jeans. The look, at first glance, seemed vintage in a way, touching upon traditional codes of luxury and high fashion. But in its essence, it was made up of cool separates normally worn by the underground youth. A few sweatshirts also added a sporty element into the mix, while casual suiting provided a touch of class that’s perfect for any evening or business look. It seems that Alchemist has become one of those brands whose aim is to upscale the streetwear market, and for his first official line, Cohen did so effortlessly.
