Air Jordan 1 “New Love” 2017 Review
Description
Hypebeasts found a new love in the Air Jordan 1 New Loves for its popping colorway that will have everyone checking out the kicks you have on your feet. They are also great as summer shoes to complete your outfit, and the price tag certainly doesn’t hurt. Die-hard fans may come looking for the Wings logo that was present in the OGs though, and most people wouldn’t care about the Jumpman on the heel.

Michael Jordan may be best known as a basketball legend, but there are many more sides to him than just that. Although the Jordan brand capitalized on His Airiness’ legacy on the court, they weren’t afraid to take inspiration from his life and his other hobbies. The Beginning Moments Pack, also dubbed as Old Love, New Love, released 11 years ago was among the hobby-inspired Jordans. The Old Love shoes stuck to his basketball career and love for Chicago, while the New Love takes styling cues from the legend’s enthusiasm for motorcycling. The latter saw a return in 2017, ten years after the first release, but as a standalone shoe and in half the price of the pack.

The retros still take plenty from the OGs. The color scheme, officially called varsity maize and black, is retained, and so is the leather for the primary material. The midsoles and outsoles that serve as foundation of the shoes are still white and translucent yellow, respectively. If there is one obvious difference, it’s that these mids now have a stamp similar to other current AJ1s in lieu of the OGs’ Wings logo. These shoes were released in batches during 2017’s second quarter, and stocks were wiped almost instantly, surprising many sneakerheads.

Pros

If you’re aiming to wow the crowds with your Air Jordans, one easy way to achieve that is by donning kicks with a crazy yet dope colorway, such as the yellow maize and black color scheme of the Air Jordan 1 “New Love”. The yellow leather really pops out on the feet, especially when paired with black. As these are AJ1s, the clean silhouette really plays the colors well without crossing the tacky territory. New Love fits true to size like the rest of the AJ1s, although those with wider feet may benefit more from shoes that are a half larger. These will look swell in summer and spring, and it wouldn’t cost you a kidney to get these as your new in-season kicks with its retail price pegged at US$110.

Cons

The nubuck will inevitably collect dust in time, so due diligence in maintaining them is necessary. The leather is okay instead of great, although they’re what you can expect from the price and from the mids in general. If your primary consideration in buying shoes is comfort, the New Loves are cushioned enough, but won’t leave your feet pain-free if you intend to wear them for the whole day. These come with yellow laces as alternative to the black ones, but most people would probably opt for the black anyway which look better with the shoes. The absence of the Wings and the inclusion of the Jumpman on the heel may have turned off fans, but these are still actually difficult to find; the New Loves sold out instantly.
