For today’s consumer audience, especially the younger ones, pretty clothes aren’t enough for their pretty pennies. They’ve grown to be apprehensive consumers, especially if what they’re purchasing are actually results of practices that are harmful to the environment. This is why a lot of designers nowadays are looking for more sustainable practices and materials to work with for their latest collections. One such is Maggie Marilyn, an up-and-coming New Zealand-based designer whose pieces are made out of alternatives that are natural and environment-friendly. In her Pre-Fall 2019 collection, she introduced a new fabric—rose petal silk—which is made out of the famous plant instead of getting them from the silkworms that are becoming endangered. From such a fine and unique fabrication, she created a soft and simple palette of pastel-hued separates, suits, and floaty dresses. There’s minimalism to her designs, but instead of the usual pragmatic look of the style, hers was a touch more romantic. Maybe it’s the rose-based silk? Or perhaps it’s the fact that she was able to construct a beautiful collection without hurting Mother Nature.
