As far as politics in fashion go, Willy Chavarria was one of the most fearless with his creations. Criticizing the way the United States of America has handled the touchy topic of immigration, the imagery on his Spring 2019 Menswear collection spoke volumes of his strong opinion. On various t-shirts and oversized sweaters, he showed the American flag and the word ‘America’ upside down, sending a powerful message down the runway. Consequently, he also sought inspiration from LA to the Bronx, two places on the opposite sides of the country, but both similarly hubs for immigrants. Touching upon these references, there was a slight nod to the late 90s and early 2000s streetwear, harkening back to the days of underground hip-hop and urban grunge. It seems that fashion has a new rebel, and it’s exciting to see what his next message down the runway will be!
