Freak isn’t necessarily a word that connotes high style horology, but luxury Swiss watch manufacturer Ulysse Nardin turned the word upside down. Since 2001, the brand has been releasing their “Freak” collection—a series of innovative watches which were the very first to integrate silicon parts. In 2018, they release another gem to their already shimmering roster, the Freak Vision model.

Beyond its sophisticated design of silver platinum accented with a rich shade of navy blue, the model exemplifies the technological advancements more than anything. Freak Vision features Ulysse Nardin’s signature Anchor Escapement, transforming the timepiece into a tourbillon itself. Additionally, the model also has the label’s new Grinder Automatic Winding System, which they claim to be twice as fast as the conventional winding systems. With such innovations contained under a sleek timepiece, this model makes for an exciting new addition to any prized watch collection.
Cons
Ironically, as with any other new timepieces, part of what makes Ulysse Nardin a valuable watch may be the reason why it’s also a risky investment. Jam-packed with multiple innovations to choke an age-old watchmaker, they all add to the vulnerability of the piece. Many of the classic traditions of horology have made it possible for the timepieces to stand the test of time, some even through a number of decades. With the Freak Vision, which was constructed under new rules and modern rules of the craft. an abundance of technological advancements may mean that the slightest mistake can lead to disaster. In this respect, clients must be careful when wearing them, if not for the hefty price tag, for the delicacy of the model itself.
