Thrilled for the Blooms: Collections We Loved for Spring 2019

Thrilled for the Blooms - Collections We Loved for Spring 2019

September 2022 Sales (LATEST)

The much anticipated New York Fashion Week has finally come to an end. It was a memorable week-long event that has given us new designers to follow but also allowed to indulge ourselves with beloved labels that have long been in the business. With the schedule jammed with many interesting shows, being overwhelmed by the number of talents is not at all surprising, even when you’re just monitoring everything through social media. Still, there were collections that were just hard to get out of our heads even in a bunch of still-shining and rising fashion stars. Here are some of the Spring collections that stood out for us during this year’s New York Fashion Week:

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs is a name that rings familiar even to the fashion-challenged, but the designer did not rely on name recognition alone to make a truly outstanding presentation this year. Instead, he let himself loose with his label’s Spring 2019 collection, ending up with impactful creations that seemed to stir nostalgia among the audience. The show was wild with colors and embellishments during which beloved pieces from the label appeared, only improved with even more ornaments but without plenty of regard for restraint. Jacobs is extravagant with his creations, particularly the dresses and the jackets, which makes his show a fitting and bombastic end to the New York Fashion Week.

The Row

Twin designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s meticulous work with their label, The Row, definitely shows in their Spring 2019 collection and has definitely paid off. Their creations that come in palettes easy to the eyes as well as with luxurious fabrics speak for themselves, even without consideration of the designers’ established reputation for thoroughness, and selectiveness even, in their work. The Row is a label that maintains the need for time and meticulousness in order to produce a collection that is timely and potentially classic, and that is impressed upon the audience lucky enough to catch their show.

Rodarte

You can count on Rodarte to commit to a show even when the weather isn’t the most desirable. The show had to go on despite the rain, and while viewers were on a graveyard too (yes, there’s no mistaking that), that’s not the most memorable part of the show. Its success still has to be credited to its duo behind the label and their Spring collection. Rodarte comes on strong with the colors and the graphics, that it’s hard not to take note of how much it stands out from its surroundings. The pieces are feminine, but don’t take that as an indication of soft, clean lines and relaxed constructions, although there was plenty of that in there too. The materials and the silhouette, when blended together, give an impression of strength that can be described as masculine, although the word is still not justifying the pieces. The venue and the circumstances were not the main highlights, but they definitely helped achieve the vibe Rodarte was going for.

Pyer Moss

Fashion can’t afford to be in a bubble of its own, especially when a big part of it is expression of both personality and collective experience. Pyer Moss’ collection takes inspiration from his perspective as a man of African descent, while also being politically charged and relevant to the times. The celebration of black culture is even made more powerful with its choice of venue, which was Weeksville in Brooklyn. Statement shirts can be dismissed as just an attempt at being trendy, but Moss’ creations are far more meaningful and impactful than just being fashionable tees; the life and the plight of African-American families also take center stage through the art on the pieces.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary show is not only a celebration of the five long decades for the designer, but also the evolution of American fashion in general. The event is made more meaningful by the fact that Ralph Lauren started in the business right in New York, and the show took place in one of its most iconic destinations. Lauren was pivotal in shaping the country’s sense of fashion, and the themes that have been associated with the brand have all made their appearance on his special night, while altered to keep up with the times. Seated are many VIPs, most of whom are friends and fans who have been touched by Ralph Lauren in a way and gave moving testimonies to the designer’s legacy.
