Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia are in a bit of a pickle lately, but it’s the best kind when it comes to overtaking a beloved fashion house. In recent seasons, the design duo who now leads Oscar de la Renta has introduced a more fluid and softer aesthetic for the brand that most young women have gone gaga over. However, this new look isn’t exactly what the label’s faithful clientele of Park Avenue princesses and society matrons are used to. So what are they to do to please both? Take that one element that’s present in both and start from there: glamour. In whatever collection he did, Oscar de la Renta always had glamour front and center, and for Kim and Garcia’s Pre-Fall 2019 Collection, glamour was also all over the clothes. This season was inspired by India, which Garcia frequently visits for business. Draping was exquisitely present this season, albeit more rigid than last season, but still refined and elegant the way the founder would have approached it. Daywear came in structured shifts and sheaths for the more mature women, while oversized pieces were obviously for the younger millennial crowd. And when it came to evening-wear, sparkles all around, from the slinkiest of slip-dresses to the more tailored couture gowns. It seems like Kim and Garcia finally found the perfect balance and blend to redefine this luxury behemoth.
