Athletes’ influence often go beyond their sport, and oftentimes that same influence last longer than their own careers. For the sneaker world, it has become the norm that sneaker lines blow up with the biggest names in sports—we got Air Jordan from Michael Jordan, Lebron Soldier from LBJ, Adidas’ Harden from James Harden and so much more. But outside the basketball court there are a lot of athlete influences that morphed into the most loved shoes we know today. Case in point: Ken Griffey Jr and the Nike Air Griffey Max. Through the whole Griffey Max line, with various models dedicated to the athlete, the name of the legend remains alive today.

With the massive success of the Air Griffey Max 1, it was a foreseeable move for Nike to launch another model for the legendary athlete. As a follow up for the first ever signature Ken Griffey Jr sneaker, the Griffey Max 2 was released in 1997. The first Retro for the model came out in 2011, and then a few more afterwards in various colorways.
Pros
The Griffey Max 2 is a sure standout among all Air Max designs, especially with the distinct pattern of the model’s upper placed on top of its black outsole and midsole. As it comes in various captivating colors, it’s easy to take your pick and rock the pair you chose with any outfit. But of course, as we know Air Max to deliver not just dashing appearance but high-quality performance, impressive features elevates this model above the rest, too. Great cushioning can be expected from the Max Air units located in the soles of the shoes, lessening impact and making the wearing experience ultra-comfortable. Lastly, this pair has intense traction too, thanks to the thick and durable outsole made from rubber.
Cons
The Griffey Max 2 come in great colorways (we can’t deny that), but not everyone loves the silhouette of this model. Somehow, there are people who feel like the style is outdated, which can be understandable because it’s a retro piece. However, the lacing system added to the parallel line detailing seem tacky for some who would rather choose the Griffey Max 1 or 3 over the Griffey Max 2.
