Rolex Sky-Dweller Watch Review
Description
The Rolex Sky-Dweller Watch is truly an innovative and advanced watch of its time, definitely deserving its iconic status among all watches from the brand. The impressive looks of the watch is a major selling point, yet it could be too much of a complicated watch even for long-time fans of the label. Sure, it captures the grandeur of classic timepieces and the capabilities of a modern watch, but it could have taken down the complexity a notch to match what the market needs.

Rolex’s golden reputation is high above the charts that it seems to be one of the very few who can’t be knocked down from its pedestal. Its status in the horology world is just unimaginable, yet it’s a brand that doesn’t slow down nor become lenient in its performance. From time to time, it goes beyond its usual designs and shock the world with incredible new ones. Sometimes, it even dares to add unusual techniques in adding several complications, like its move to make highly complicated watches, which led to the manufacture of the Rolex Sky-Dweller.

Release Date: 2012
Price: US$40,000+

The year 2012 was a year of complications for Rolex, with it releasing a line of ultra-complicated wristwatches as the new flagship of the luxury and premium timepieces. One of the watched was named Sky-Dweller, a successful attempt of the watch label to merge the classic Rolex aesthetic with the latest and impressive functionality of modern watches.

Specifications:

  • Model Case: 42mm, Oyster in Everose gold
  • Bezel: Fluted; rotation-capable Ring Command by Rolex
  • Crystal: Sapphire (scratch-resistant)
  • Water Resistance: Up to 330 feet (100 m)
  • Functions: Hours, Minutes, Seconds, 2nd time zone, annual calendar, and month display
  • Winding: Self-winding and bi-directional
  • Power Reserve: 72 hours

Pros

For people who use watches mainly as statement pieces, the Sky-Dweller will definitely be on your zone—it’s a bold and big timepiece that instantly dazzles any eyes that gaze upon it. It fluted bezel was designed to sparkle too, reflecting any light that hits its surface. It is also named as one of the most complicated watched of the brand for a reason: it has both the GMT complication and a dual- time zone at the same time. Added to that mix is the ability of one hour hand to be moved backward or forward independently by one hour—making it a true GMT watch by allowing a re-setting of time to a new timezone without having to stop the whole timepiece.

Cons

While there is another level of appreciation for complications, especially the more complicated ones, the idea of bringing in a hard-to-fathom watch in an international trip seems too much. There are many that would prefer much simpler watches that also have dual timezone features, also contained in a more minimalist casing. And while the bling factor is a huge deal for some, others think it can be lessened in this model to improve the overall experience with the watch.
