Description
The Corum Admiral Legend 42 may seem like a watch that is just colorful for the uninitiated, but the design is intentional and appeals to those who often find themselves on the vast seas and boats. It comes with a reliable movement and an easy to read dial, although the semaphore-inspired indices allow for a more interesting way to read time. However, the watch is best kept dry despite its nautical references—its depth rating is only 50 meters.

Bubble may be Corum’s most popular line now, but back in the 20th century, it was the Admiral that ensured the success of the watchmaking company. Corum takes the name from an international sailing regatta, the Admiral’s Cup, which coincidentally is also an alternate name for the Admiral line. As such, the watches on the line are not only marketed but also inspired by the men who have an affinity for the seas, as well as the sport of sailing.

In 2016, Corum released the Admiral Legend 42 which is distinct through the flags featured on the dial. As with other timepieces on the Admiral line, it is made even more of a standout because of its dodecagonal case, an element that has worked for half a century. It deserves as much attention as the Bubble not only for the design but also for its features and rationale behind it—it is a nod to the sports as well as the ocean.

Pros

Visually, the 2016 rendition of the Corum Admiral Legend 42 is riveting. The dial is colorful, but it is impressive how it manages to keep itself from being an eyesore. It may be appealing to laymen, but the flags on the design also speak to a dedicated niche. The colorful triangular flags are actually inspired by the International Code of Signals, the former serving the same purpose as numeral indices. Potential buyers also have a choice in the color of the dial, which can be black, deep blue or white. Despite the design, the watch remains legible, and the lume improves on that in dimmer environments. Its movement, based on the ETA 2895, is reliable and accurate, so time telling would not be a problem.

Cons

Many have wondered about the Corum Admiral Legend 42’s measly depth rating. One would expect at least 100 meters than the Admiral Legend 42’s 50-meter water resistance capacity. For a nautical inspired watch marketed for ocean and sea lovers, it is best away from moisture and water to keep the beauty functioning for a long time.
