If there’s a brand that is able to fully transform the beauty community in various ways, it would be Bobbi Brown. The luxury brand has been a trailblazer in many efforts to improve the beauty world, and it all started with the launch of 10 lipsticks that all have brown shade bases—an effort to change the makeup market and open it up to the idea that simple makeup can still be wearable and flattering.

A Woman Named Bobbi Brown

All the Bobbi Brown magic came from no other than a woman from where the name came from: Bobbi Brown (Founder). Bobbi finished her theatrical makeup degree from Emerson College in 1980. She immediately pursued a career as a professional makeup artist in New York City. Just a year after her graduation, Glamour magazine gave Bobbi a chance to have her first ever editorial shoot.

One of the pinnacles of her career was when she became the make-up artist for Naomi Campbell in a legendary Vogue cover shot by Patrick Demarchelier. After that, Bobbi became more intent on reaching her vision of creating a line of more simple makeup & cosmetics. It was an effort to introduce natural makeup to the beauty industry, especially makeup that would complement different complexions. Her first major project towards attaining this vision was the creation of natural-looking lipstick shades that became the first ever collection of her makeup brand, Bobbi Brown.

The growth of her brand didn’t stop Bobbi from reaching other forms of success in the industry, She started writing books, and her first one titled “Bobbi Brown Beauty” became a New York Times Best-Seller, selling over 100,000 copies. Through the years, she was able to write and publish a total of eight books. She was also been appointed to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations (ACTPN) by no other than the former President Barack Obama.

Bobbi Brown: The Brand

The story of success of the high-end cosmetics brand named after its founder started with an initial lipstick line composed of 10 lipsticks. With just $5,000 dollars, the brand was launched in New York in 1991 and sold through Bergdorf Goodman. While the brand expected to sell a total of 100 lipsticks on its 1st month, it surprisingly hit that in just one day.

Going against the famous makeup look of the 80s urging women that “more is more,” the founder of Bobbi instilled in the brand the ethos of natural-makeup. By 1995, the Estee Lauder companies saw the potential of the brand and offered to buy it. And although the brand wasn’t actually for sale, its founder saw the opportunity to take the business to the next level while maintaining its core and integrity. Leonard Lauder agreed with that idea and told Bobbi, “I want you to keep doing what you’re doing,” hence, the growth and success of the brand under Lauder Group of Companies for the past 2 decades.
