It’s fitting that Batsheva Hay chose supermodel Coco Rocha, known for her unique ability to do about 100 poses in a minute, to be her muse on her Pre-Fall 2019 collection lookbook. Here, Rocha is as animated as ever, giving more life to Hay’s slightly innocent yet entirely subversive offering of classic silhouettes in stark color combinations and pretty prints. Some of the looks looked even little girlish at first glance, particularly the more doll-like pieces which came in pastel hues, jewel tones, bright gingham, and fancy florals. The decades Hay touched upon this season varied as well, taking on the modish approach of the 60s, the sensual forms of the 40s, the elongation of the 70s, and the haute couture shapes that dominated the 50s. Despite this flurry of references, however, she managed to make everything look cohesive by injecting her signature slightly-cartoonish touch to all the clothes, making them all the more fascinating and fashion-forward. It remains to be seen who her target audience really is, but one thing is certain: her clothes are pretty to look at!
