It’s no surprise that Olivier Rousteing of Balmain is a huge fan of the 1980s. The fashion crowd is always fed his ultra-glamorous shoulder-padded supermodel army every season. But for his spring 2019 menswear show, the designer chose a very specific 80s icon to reference: Michael Jackson. As the King of Pop’s classic tunes filled the show venue, out came various tributes to his major contributions to fashion: red leather jackets (circa Thriller era) and unapologetically bedazzled pieces. Jackson’s famous double-breasted British military look even made appearances as both menswear and womenswear jackets. This all might seem gimmicky on the outside, but there’s no denying that sincere affection was displayed on the show from a true Michael Jackson fan.
