Numerous designers have indulged in recapturing the exotic elegance and mysteries of Ancient Egypt and have romanticized them on the runway. This season, Olivier Rousteing did that for Balmain. It’s easy to think this theme is a perfect match for the designer, but his own take was completely unpredictable. For starters, Cara Delevingne opened the show in a white silk suit with Rousteing’s signature strong shoulders, but this time they were as slanted as the Ancient Egyptians’ wing-tip eyeliners. The Issey Miyake-like pleats that formed bigger and rounder silhouettes were also extremely refreshing. Although the show descended into his usual 80s-inspired garbs by the end, these new looks proved that there’s still hope for a lot of surprised from the house of Balmain.
