Creating footwear is an indispensable craft. It takes hours of designing and constructing to create the perfect pieces to go on one’s feet. While it may not seem so, sneakers are also results of expert craftsmanship. They’re constructed to look beautiful, feel comfortable, and durable for a myriad of situations. Among the most well-crafted shoes in the luxury retail business are those of Nike’s, but none in their range can quite equal their NikeCraft Mars Yard shoes, which now has a 2.0 version.

Release date: July 27, 2017
The shoes are the product of a long-standing collaboration between the American sportswear giant and artist Tom Sachs. Sachs is and has been designing footwear inspired by his NASA’s scientists and want his work to be durable for space adventures. After years of coming up with the perfect footwear for such, Nike and Tom Sachs released their Mars Yard 2.0 sneakers last July 27, 2017. They cost $200 a pair.
Pros
The shoes are a construct of Sach’s artistic mind and Nike’s innovative sensibilities. The consists of polyester warp-knit tricot mesh upper that will help let the feet breathe more (as compared to their original material, Vectran) and SFB outsoles to manage any type of surface. The artistic touch is seen on their interesting colorway—a mix of desert tan, faded cream, and onyx red—that further evokes the adventurous spirit upon which the sneakers are inspired from.
Cons
Although this project is more about Sach’s space exhibition, the shoes lack some much-needed artistry in terms of design. Aside from the colorways and blending of various innovative materials, the aesthetic of the shoes leaves a lot to be desired. For a shoe that is a collaborative effort between the designers of Nike and artist Tom Sachs himself, they don’t look (at first glance) like a pair that is worth its title.
