The birth of an iconic brand

Stephen hailed from a not so glamorous background. With his father working as a draughtsman while his mother just stays home, it wasn’t that much of a great life for their family. Stephen tried pursuing a language-related career by entering the local grammar school, but he failed and soon found himself getting a slot at Medway College. He was 16 then when he started studying jewelry design. His attempt for success didn’t pan out very well the first time around. When he left a two-year partnership with another jewelry designer, John Donald, he faced a disastrous consequence that halted his success.
Stephen set out to the jewelry world with one vision in mind: to be the best craftsman. Hence, every step of the way, he exerted only his best, even taking whole-day trade jobs for a few bucks. His hard work paid off when an offer by a Canadian for an all-around jeweler came, even taking Stephen to his first airplane ride—to Canada.From that man he learned everything he knows about gems, a perfect learning opportunity in a beautiful country.
As a young designer, Stephen had admired Garrard, the crown jeweler, and had wanted everything in his being to serve a special purpose in the place. It was the same place that gave him his first real break, and lo and behold, Stephen eventually grabbed the coveted position of being Garrard’s Creative Director.
With his stint in the hallowed walls of Garrard’s building, Stephen’s expertise even more flourished. It was his interaction and transactions with A-list celebrities and known personnel that elevated his ways and perspective, eventually making him ready for his very own brand. Stephen Webster’s creation and establishment wasn’t an easy process. It was a business that Stephen and his brother, David, shared, and together they toiled to push the brand into the front of the fashion and jewelry scene. They went through all the painstaking process of sharing a space at Basel Trade Fair, opening of accounts little by little, personal travels to visit shops, and then finally, in 1994, the brand finally opened a store in London.
