More than a century of history

Georg Jensen

Known for its silverware, home décor, watches, and fine jewelries, Georg Jensen was founded in 1904 by its namesake, Danish silversmith Georg Jensen, in Copenhagen. Before he established the company, Georg studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (graduated in 1892), and afterwards worked at the Bing & Grøndahl porcelain factory and then Mogens Ballin.

Five years after Georg Jensen came into existence, Georg decided to open a shop in Berlin. In 1902, he opened a larger workshop and retail shop in Copenhagen. Georg served as director of the company until 1924, and as the creative head until he passed away in 1935.

Design objects for all

Georg Jensen started with a vision to combine beautiful designs with functionality. Highly influenced by the Art Nouveau lines during the time, the brand became known for its iconic silver tableware which were exhibited across Europe. It injected its own spin and character that were inspired by nature, with bouquets of flowers and bunches of grapes for instance.

Since then, the company strived to keep the principles that its founder started. Collaborations and special commissions assured the continuity of the brand to stride along contemporary times. Alfredo Häberli, Sigvard Bernadotte, and Constantin Wortmann are only some of the many famous designers who helped create innovative but still elegant and lasting designs that stay true to the brand’s tradition of quality and craftsmanship.

Contemporary look all the time

Despite its image on the jewelry industry peaking at the age of Modernism, Georg Jensen’s secret to keep up with the times is to produce pieces that are always current and contemporary. It manages to veer away from the fast-rise trends that easily fades into the background. It is a brand that focuses on what will stand the test of time, jewelry that has an identity of its own.

The expertise of the brand in crafting timeless silverware has been easily transferred into gorgeous ageless earrings, necklaces, rings, brooches, bracelets and even belt buckles. Refined pieces for elegant women became the forefront of Jensen jewelries, which evolved into architectural pieces full of curves and shapes with an organic feel to them. Recently, Georg Jensen celebrated 100 years of Henning Koppel, one of its revolutionary and lasting designers. Along with the celebration, the brand introduced a new jewelry collection by designer Jacqueline Rabun, another set that has captivated women from all over the globe.

Awards and acquisitions

Before the founder’s eventual demise at age 69, Georg received many awards from 1925 to 1932, which include two Grand Prix at the Paris World’s Fair and one at the World’s Fair in Brussels. The silversmith was also the only non-British participant to exhibit at the Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1932.

In 1972, Royal Copenhagen bought Georg Jensen, prompting the merging of the brand with Boda-Nova Höganäs KeramikOrrefors Kosta Boda, and Venini. This resulted to the well-known Royal Scandinavia Group. In 2001, the Group was bought by Axcel Capital Partners and when 2012 came, Investcorp acquired the brand from Axcel for US$140 million.

Rich designs and artistry

Today, Georg Jensen is a well-known brand with a reputation that is only growing. It offers a variety of lifestyle products (accessories, bar and wine, tableware, watches, and more) and currently has more than 110 retail stores across the world. It is one of the most renowned and prominent Scandinavian brands that is immediately synonymous to creative boldness, excellent artistry, and innovative collaborations. Perhaps, it is this open approach to modern and new designs combined with its rich heritage and traditional principles that make Georg Jensen products not only unique but timeless.

The next time you are on a hunt for fancy jewelries, classy homeware, sophisticated watches, and refined accessories that you want to stay with you for a very long time; or you want that contemporary, minimalist, and functional features true to the Scandinavian affinity towards inventive designs, Georg Jensen might just be the right fit for you.
