An Asian giant, a world-wide brand

Japanese brand Casio Computer Co., Ltd. is a manufacturing consumer and commercial electronics based in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. It was established in 1946 by Tadao Kashio, an established engineer who specialized in fabrication technology. He became popular with the invention of yubiwa pipe. During that time, cigarettes were so important as Japan was impoverished because of WWII. The success of the yubiwa pipe followed other great successes including the first ever electro-mechanical calculator introduced in 1954.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Casio developed the home electronic keyboards which are still very visible in the market today. The product line under the brand continued to expand through the introduction of Casio wristwatches. The brand contributed important innovations in watchmaking as it became one of the first manufactures to produce quartz watches. Under the watch line, Casio consistently find wider approach to the industry by manufacturing watches that display time in different timezones, watches which could read temperatures, altitude, atmospheric displays and GPS. The variety of consumer electronic products it offers truly dominated not only the Asian market, but the world as well.

1990s: a shocking wave of the G-shock series

Casio’s G-Shock line is probably the most popular and most bought watch series under the brand. G-shock is designed to withstand mechanical shock and vibration. They are made for athletes, military and outdoorsy oriented people. The watch was released in 1983 and took off in the 1990s. The line’s reputation of withstanding a drop from high building and still manage to be still in one piece was popularized among the 90s kid. The popularity grew and increased at the latter part of the decade (1998) as it recorded 19 million sales worldwide.

Custom made designs and limited editions were produced along with major collaborations of Casio with designers, musicians, pop culture fanatics. It was documented that during that same year, 1998, G-shock released over 200 models worldwide. Indeed, the introduction of G-shock line became a shocking point in Casio’s history.
