Introduction to Bergdorf Goodman

If you have seen the much talked about documentaries Dita and the Family Business, and Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s, not much introduction, is needed for one of the world’s most premier retail empires that hails from the heart of Manhattan, New York.

Seriously, how can there be an hour-long film dedicated to how a department store came to be? Or even a documentary that brings, and enthralls, the viewers behind the backdoor of the famed luxury department store? Read on and you’ll find out.

Humble Beginnings

The growth of Bergdorf Goodman’s reputation as the world’s most distinguished luxury department store can be traced back to a humble tailor shop in Fifth Avenue, New York which was opened by Herman Bergdorf in 1899. A young merchant by the name of Edwin Goodman worked for Bergdorf as an intern for two years in that very shop. In 1901, Goodman has earned enough to acquire a share of the business, hence, the store was renamed Bergdorf Goodman. Five years later, when the shop moved to a new location, Goodman had the audacity to buy Bergdorf’s share in the company while the latter enjoyed his much-deserved retirement in Paris. Thanks to Goodman, gone were the times when you have to go to a tailor for your clothing needs as he was the first to introduce ready-to-wear apparel to the fashion world.

When Goodman’s son, Andrew, took over the business as the head of the company, Bergdorf Goodman, then a five-story building, grew exponentially. Not only did the physical store expanded in size, but its range of merchandise and services increased as well. The younger Goodman, a risk-taker as he was, started a fur salon, developed a fragrance line, and created a ready-to-wear selection for the younger market which is known up to this day as Miss Bergdorf.

In 1990, a menswear store dedicated to serve the trendy Wall Street guy who wears an exquisite pair of a suit and a tie every day to work was opened just across the original store in Fifth Avenue. Two decades of active operation later, the menswear collection was recast and reorganized to what is now known as Goodman’s. The sub-brand, which offers products of good quality and style, is an apt counterpart to Bergdorf’s and its high-spending ladies.

Today in Bergdorf Goodman

New York City is home to the largest department stores in the world. It comes with no surprise then that the opening, closing, and transformation of these companies come with the territory. Same goes with Bergdorf Goodman, which, after quite a tedious history of changing management and ownership, a usual feat in the fashion business mind you, became one-third of the Neiman Marcus Group, one of the leading merchants of the most distinctive luxury goods.

At present, Bergdorf Goodman has two mid-rise department stores located on opposite sides of Fifth Avenue. The store, which was relocated to the renowned and elegant Vanderbilt mansion, features eight floors of sheer fashion bliss that is furnished with posh dressing rooms built only for the best selections of the top international designers. The high-end multi-storey department store also features a salon, a luxury spa, and a café—an ultimate destination for the ladies who wish for nothing but an ultra sophisticated day in the city.

Comprehensive and Top Collections

Bergdorf Goodman houses exclusive brands for women such as Chanel, Gucci, Versace, and Charvet, Tom Ford, and John Lobb in the men’s store. Haute couture offerings are also available from the coveted collections of Chloé, Narciso Rodriquez, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Meanwhile, mid-priced clothing lines like DKNY, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Theory offers rack after rack of excellent fashion goodness.

Products available in store include exclusive and well-curated array of accessories, bags, jewelries, lingeries, shoes and childrens’ clothing. Bridal gowns and wedding shoes are also readily available at the store.

Beyond the Name

Bergdorf Goodman’s success as New York’s fashion mecca transcends beyond the amusement value Hollywood made out of it and the attention it receives from the rest of the world. Bergdorf Goodman is a high-end fashion institution that found success through exclusive elite collections, effective marketing strategies, and exceptional customer service. It prides itself for bringing the pinnacle of luxury to the most elite clientele. No wonder, it remains a must-see fashion haven and shopping paradise for the ultra fashion savvy and sophisticated shoppers.
