When it comes to Christopher Kane, there’s hardly a need for introduction but when a situation calls for it, he’s easily recognizable as one of the most talented and world-renowned British designers. Following his international reputation, he as a designer and his label are part of what shone a light back on the British fashion scene and what instigated its revival.

There’s so much to say about his rebellious yet feminine aesthetic as it manifests differently in each collection, but one thing is common among them all: his designs take something out of the ordinary and mundane and turns it into something that’s runway-worthy. From materials to prints, he takes the ones you would never expect would be used for high fashion or by a luxury designer and makes them fit in again and even desirable by a wide range of consumers.

An award-garnering graduation collection

Christopher Kane went to Central Saint Martins for his college education and it was during that time that he got exposure and gained experience as he worked for two designers, namely Russell Sage and Giles Deacon.

In Kane’s case, talent precedes any professional experience in the actual industry, as evidenced by his graduation collection that garnered a lot of media buzz, attention in the fashion world, a few awards, and admiration from Donatella Versace herself. His collection was notable for the daring, barely-there lace dresses accented by edgy brass rings. It won the L’Oréal Colour Award and the Harrods Design Award, which got Kane a cash reward but, more importantly, his own window space in the glorious department store to feature some of his creations.

Donatella was impressed enough that she took him in to contribute to the couture collectionof Versace  and consult for their shoes and accessories. By 2009, he was appointed as creative director for Versace’s diffusion line called Versus.

A proper entry to the fashion industry

In 2006, he started his own eponymous brand with his sister Tammy Kane. According to Christopher, they had the usual casual complications as siblings, but nothing too serious ever brought too much tension between the duo. A huge part of the Christopher Kane brand’s success is actually largely because of the synergy of the two when they worked together. The hype from his graduation collection also made things easier for the momentum it created.

Christopher Kane debuted its first collection at London Fashion Week for Spring and Summer of 2006. This would be known as one of the label’s most iconic collections because of eclectic mix of neon body-con dresses, lace, embellishments, and safety buckles. These details would have continuing influences throughout, even on its recent designs.

The best way to describe Christopher Kane’s unique designs would be through his unique creative process. For instance, his Lover’s Lace collection from AW15 was inspired by his sketches of nudes, which was brainstormed during a night of life sketching with his team and dancers. The candidness and romanticism of life sketches was captured. When they opened their first store in London in 2015, they celebrated in the same way with A-list guests like Salma Hayek and Daisy Lowe wherein the guests turned into artists for a few hours of life sketching with nude models.

Design philosophy and collection setup

Despite the general aesthetic set by Christopher Kane’s early designs, the brand would go on to experiment with other inspirations very few designers would even consider. It pushed boundaries with 3D design, galactic patterns, and leather and floral.

With Christopher Kane, it’s safest to expect there will always be an element of surprise. The label’s designs are rarely random, though that would seem like the case most of the time. Their creations always come from a place of personal and abstract emotion or mood relating to different aspects of life and fantasy by way of escapism.

As of the moment, Christopher Kane has won multiple fashion awards, including the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award from British Fashion Awards in 2013 as the greatest one yet. The Christopher Kane brand has also been granted the Vogue Fashion Fund and was recently supported by Kering, the group that also handles the likes of Saint Laurent, GucciBalenciaga, and fellow British designers, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney.

This allows more focus of efforts towards the creative aspect of the brand, while the luxury goods group handles the business side of it.

Christopher Kane continues to release its collections of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, Resort, and pre-collections. This has been a big expansion from what used to be their bi-annual release of Spring-Summer and Autumn-Winter. As the brand continues to unfold different products like footwear and leather goods, it promises to bring out more of the uniqueness embedded in each collection and piece by the British designer.
