Phillip Lim, a Chinese descent, an Asian success

The man behind 3.1. Phillip Lim

Phillip Lim is an international success story as he made his name as THE Phillip Lim. Some of his peers who made names in fashion in the mid-2000s were already affiliated from various legacy brands. Alexander Wang worked for Balenciaga before establishing his own name as Wang; Jason Wu was the artistic director of Hugo Boss since 2013, and the list could go on and on. But Phillip Lim has only done 3.1 Phillip Lim.

But who is Phillip Lim?

Phillip Lim is a Chinese fashion designer who was born in Thailand in 1973. During the Cambodian Genocide, his parents decided to migrate in the United States and moved to Orange Country, California. Even as a child, he never thought that fashion designing was for him. He was raised by Asian parents who believed that success for their children can be measured if they become a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. Growing up with this mind set, he chose to major in business, but was not able to pursue as he shifted to home economics. His background in home economics became useful while working for “Development” in Los Angeles.

His training from Development enabled him to open his own label five years after. And there began to flourish his huge success in the fashion industry.

Lim and Zhou collaboration

The success of Phillip cannot be entirely attributed to him. He was backed up by Wen Zhou, whom he met during his time in Development. Like Lim, Zhou was also an immigrant who was able to launch her own textile-manufacturing company at the age of 21. The skills and talent of Lim and the textile business manufacturing knowledge of Zhou enabled them to establish 3.1 Phillip Lim. Their aim is to introduce designer clothing at a reasonable price. Along this story, the two were become pioneers of designers sportwear. Their sportwear line was a huge hit which allowed their company to gain global recognition. They were able to expand their lines into women’s line, a men’s line, a children’s line, a swim line, a lingerie line and even an eco-friendly line to encourage others to “go green.”

3.1. Phillip Lim’s designs usually reflect a mixture of Western and Asian inspiration. Most of the brand’s designs reflect combinations of sophistication and modern street-wear look.

As Lim is known for being laid back, it is manifested in his label’s creations. The cool and laid-back designs with an edgy twist are very much appreciated by the market, hence catapulting the brand further into success. Lim looks deeply to all kinds of things that surround him, therefore allowing such fashion inspirations incorporate into the brand’s collections and pieces. These observations about surroundings and the youthful vibe in every collection made 3.1 Phillip Lim stand out among its contemporaries.

The label’s creative way of fusing different looks together, and coming out into something trendy and unique allowed it to occupy a big spot in the fashion industry. No wonder the Lim brand is regarded as one of the fastest growing modern brands with four brand stores in New York, Seoul, Tokyo and Los Angeles.
