Turning 30 is a milestone many people feel ambivalent about. For those bugged with concerns about getting older, 30 is when you enter the not-old-but-not-young stage. For those who are tired of giving a damn, the new decade is something worth welcoming—it is finally the time when you have established the things worth your energy. Fashion may or may not be among those priorities, but it’s comforting to know that you have pieces on your wardrobe you can count on whenever you need to dress to impress. It becomes less acceptable to say that you have nothing to wear on your closet.
Unless you still need to control the urge to shop at this point, chances are, you already have a general idea of what you like when it comes to dressing up, and know the value of buying pieces that you can maximize for a very long time. If you need a little help figuring out if you’re missing something, then consider the following basics to have on your wardrobe so you could claim that you have your bases covered by the time you turn the big 3-0.
If your wardrobe is still lacking a dependable leather jacket, it is the time to finally indulge and treat yourself with a nice, supple one. You may be tempted to go for other trendy outerwear that may come cheaper, but a good leather jacket has never gone out of style. It also has versatility going for it as it can complement outfits intended both in and out of the office, and even more. Even if it costs you a huge sum in the end, investing on a leather jacket is something you won’t regret especially once you find yourself using it on many occasions—even a worn in look works for the wardrobe staple.
Heels may make it to most lists similar to this, but there’s a good reason to invest in ballet flats as well—you can wear them whether you choose to dress up and dress down, sans the pain and blisters heels can cause by the end of the day. They’re not leveling down from their taller counterparts because they are still very chic; you can just search for old photos of Audrey Hepburn if you need further proof. You can be ladylike regardless if you opt for pants or dresses to wear with them.
Here is another outerwear that works as great as a good leather jacket. Picking up an elegant blazer can save you time when you need to look put together in an instant. You can throw it over a cocktail dress, an office attire, or even a shirt. Working at an office isn’t a requirement for owning one, although you can thank yourself later when you need to look slightly formal and feel warmer at the same time.
The silk blouse is an underrated piece of clothing, often thought of as something preferred by older generations. That is not quite a fair description for the garment; even though it may exude some retro vibe, choosing to wear a silk blouse for a day can instantly make you feel like you have your stuff together, albeit just sartorially, and regardless of age. It’s low effort although it does not appear to be one, and it looks great even when you have it with tailored pants or denim jeans.
You don’t have to be a jetsetter to have a reliable travel bag. When you need to take a short respite from your everyday life, it would be nice not to have to worry about the bag you’ll have to take with you on your trip. Investing on a trusty luggage or duffel can also save you from dealing with the misfortune of a bag giving out due to the weight of your stuff. Besides style, you should also consider material, size, and weight.
Belts can be both functional and fashionable. They literally and figuratively pull up your wardrobe. They’re also useful when it comes to style—wearing a belt will let you be put together and occasionally allow you create a statement. Belts are not limited to pants too, cinching your top with it can just be as modish.
The LBD is a wardrobe must-have, but your collection would be better off if you have a selection that also comes in other colors. If you need to do your shopping, go pick up some smart-looking frocks that can easily impress even with minimal accessories. A great option not only affects people’s perception of you, it can also serve you well when you feel you’re adequately dressed to do your job.
When talking of investment pieces, trench coats often come up in the conversation, and it’s not hard to see why. They are classics, giving your outfit some structure and providing you with needed protection from the elements. A trench coat is not a limiting as it looks regardless of its construction—you can wear almost anything underneath and style it, leave it unbuttoned or otherwise, tie the waist, depending on your mood.
The options are not wanting when it comes to sunglasses, and surely you can find cheaper styles that fit your taste. But you can save money and be less frustrated when you purchase a classic, well-made pair. Besides looking cooler with them on, your eyes will also thank you for the protection that they can give against the sun’s harsh rays.
Our devices have mostly replaced watches in telling time, but a timepiece can be just as good as jewelry when you know how to choose and where to buy them. Great watches can last a lifetime and even more when given proper care, and can be passed onto future generations, telling a story beyond their manufacturing houses. For a 30-something-year-old, it can also help in looking more composed and collected, and give the impression that you can appreciate the finer things in life.
