While it’s always beautiful when designers do something personal with their designs, Vivetta Ponti went a little overboard with her latest line. Inspired by the furnishings and the fabrications of her childhood, she recreated her youth in her Fall 2019 show. What resulted, however, was an extremely juvenile offering that did little to entice but did more to confuse the fashion crowd. You can argue whether the overall idea was novel or unnecessary (we’d go for the latter!) but we can’t deny that the execution left a lot to be desired. In fact, most of the pieces left us feeling a little uncomfortable, which is ironic since many of the outerwear was either made with or heavily inspired by Ponti’s childhood beddings. The florals she used looked simply old and worn out, most likely the curtains in her grandmother’s home. Scraps of fabric were sewed on together, in what looked like a patchwork approach, but ended up looking very incomplete. Those looks that were whole, however, had such frumpy silhouettes that exhibited unforgiving proportions. And that piece embellished with stuffed toys? Better left unseen again! We can’t deny that Vivetta is a quirky brand, but everything about this show was just overkill!
