Fashion is all about standing out. It’s about expressing oneself and showcasing how different and unique a person is from the rest. Among all the markets that define this, sneaker culture almost always hits the nail with the head. A lot of items in this market are unconventional, unique, and at the same time, comfortable. A lot of people have relied on sneakers to really cap off their own different senses of style. And now, Vans is capitalizing on such with new shoes in collaboration with the Anti Social Social Club.

The Anti Social Social Club is a London-based streetwear brand catered for the unconventional individuals. They combine the sensibilities of streetwear with avant-garde style, creating a new look for the weirdos and outcasts of society. One of their latest collaborations with other luxury retail brands was with Vans, leading to two new sneaker models, the Vans Sk8-Hi and Vans Authentic. Both were released on May 26, 2017, on the famous London area, Dover Street Market, and their prices range from $90 to $105 a pair.
Pros
Both the Vans Sk8-Hi and Vans authentic are as streetwear as sneakers can get. With a graphic black-white-pink colorway, the shoes seem inspired by the quirkiness of street art and the unconventionality of underground skateboard culture. The contrasting-toned stitching on the canvas uppers exemplifies the craftsmanship behind the pieces. A stand-out element of the shoes is their laces, which are printed with various texts and slogans to really capture one’s attention. In all block capital letters, some of the text says “I expect things to come” and “Never again.” among others.
Cons
The Anti Anti Social club is known for their unorthodox use of color and silhouette, both of which do not vary in their collaboration with Vans. For a brand that’s supposed to encourage individuality, their new sneaker release doesn’t have a lot of variety to go around. Furthermore, the shoes rely too heavily on the slogan-ridden laces for design impact. While their black-white-pink colorway is certainly eye-catching, and the text laces are novel, the shoes had a lot of potential—that arguably wasn’t put to good use—to really break free from normal design sensibilities and come up with completely unique and out-of-the-box sneakers.
