Designers, especially female designers, have been pressured to take femininity and turn it on it’s head. It happened with Phoebe Philo’s minimalist take on Celine, as well as Maria Grazia Chiuri’s whimsical touches on Valentino and then to Dior. But Ulla Johnson has always stayed faithful to her quirky and girly look, more so for her resort 2019 collection. This season, her brand of femininity was as colorful as ever, taking enigmatic hues such as sunburst yellow, burnt orange, dusty lapis, and a few pops of fuschia pink and painting them onto an array of billowy dresses and cozy separates. The floral embroidery on the cream-color pieces were even a nod to Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist. The frills and the ruching added to the classic feminine take, while the carefree silhouettes and easy-going attitude provided the girl all the agency to be herself. And isn’t this type of clothes the best ones to wear for a summer holiday?
