It’s one thing to reference the history of French fashion, but it’s a completely different story if the inspiration is the actual fashion capital that is Paris. But this was exactly what happened with Tsumori Chisato for her Pre-Fall 2019 Collection. The Japanese designer captured the charm, history, and romance that Paris inspires in both tourists and locals alike. French imagery wasn’t scarce in this offering, with the Eiffel Tower appearing in numerous looks, most notably in a powder blue dress and a red knitted sweater. A series of separates were even printed with the map of the famous city, which might have looked tacky, but was actually adorable albeit slightly kitschy. In terms of the city’s stamp on glamour, this was referenced with a peachy faux fur coat that looked similar to the ermine pieces French royals used to wear (most notoriously Marie Antoinette) in court. And for the closing looks? A series of ensembles bearing the French flag’s colors—from a long and wide jumpsuit to a chic winter coat—which perfectly summarized this melodious ode to the “City of Lights.”
