For the second consecutive season, Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin are touching on dance for their latest collection. Their Fall 2019 line for Tome was all about the art of movement and how clothes magnify such grace and beauty. Think diaphanous dresses bias cut to fit and float around the body, graphic lines to elongate one’s silhouette, and soft silks to flow in every direction. And for dancers, these are all well and good, but what about other customers? There’s a world beyond the stage and Lobo and Martin should be focusing on it. Though their surprisingly light outerwear pieces were stellar, everything else was mediocre at best. They looked too much like dance costumes to be taken seriously as a luxury ready-to-wear offering. Had they better combined both ideas in a more harmonic way, this would have been a better hit!
