We’re down to the last four months of the year, and if there’s anything we can say with great conviction, it’s that prints have been vogue so far. Each season had its own share of wild and interesting patterns to don, and we’re not seeing any waning of the trend’s staying power in the remaining quarter. But with the number of available prints that you could opt for, there’s no blaming if you become overwhelmed. We’re going to stop you right there now—being swamped by choices is no reason to turn to the often dependable but sometimes bland monochrome.
Granted, prints are nothing novel. If anything, they find their way back to the limelight if we give them just enough time. And we do not doubt that some on the list are familiar to the casual fashionista—but that does not mean we’re returning to anything tired or downright tacky. Sometimes we find that with the right print and color, the season, or year even, could become sartorially lively.
If you still have not caught on with prints for this year, then there is no better time to jump on in than today. The following may vary in intensity, some are considered classic that could be great starters if you tend to shy away from patterns, while others are wild and invigorating that are best if your clothes tire you out in their blandness. Still, you would fit right in the styles of the year while also giving your usual getup the sprucing up it needs.
Animal prints
Now, now, you may think that beginning with animal prints is cheating. Despite them being historically polarizing, the fact is, they have always been around. It’s easy to go overboard with them that they eventually become fashion faux pas, which is probably why the less gutsy tend to go the opposite direction. The good news is that the animal prints we’re seeing in 2018 are not as chaotic; the leopards, snake, tiger, cow and what have you still make for bold choices but there is more restraint in the execution that it can be easier to wear them everyday.
Plaid
Clueless may be released in the 90s but Alicia Silverstone’s plaid is no old news. No one would dare bat an eye if you channel your inner Cher this year, but if bright checks are not your thing then you can also take plaid in less vibrant colors. Have them in dresses, jackets, skirts and suits—honestly, the picks are bountiful.
Polka dots
There was a time when polka dots were thought of as juvenile, or even a style that belongs to decades ago. Designers have proven that notion wrong by making models strut on the runway with them on. Instead of bright colors we’re accustomed to seeing in the past, 2018 had them often in neutrals and muted colors, lending the print a more formal, adult vibe.
Rainbow
Have the colors of the meteorological phenomenon that amazes even adults right on your wardrobe; 2018 is big on the rainbow print. The mash of colors can make you go effortlessly retro, and they could complement your dependable denim any day of the week. If you find the usual rainbow pattern rather busy, there are more subtle options that still fit in the category without hurting the eye.
Stars
Stars are appealing to a broad audience, regardless if you have a fondness for celestial bodies or find that they’re helpful in your day-to-day decisions. And it’s not embarrassing to parade your childhood fascination with them, even if just in terms of fashion.The impression may depend on the size of the prints, with larger stars giving a more playful aura while tinier ones, mystical.
Tropical patterns
Let no one limit you to wearing them even if you are not strutting on the beach and basking under the warm sun; tropical prints are hot any time of the year. In fact, they’ve gone beyond apparel and took on accessories as well. If you want to feel light as if on a holiday, these are the way to go. And remember, even if it’s not beach season where you are, somewhere, someone is enjoying the summer, and you’re allowed to have that state of mind.
