There’s power in femininity. This is what most female designers work hard to prove through their clothing. But while many often choose to mix in a bit of masculinity to solidify their powerful statement, Alice Temperley goes the opposite route. For her, the true power of femininity is within the conviction of the style as dictated by the trailblazers before her. One such trailblazer was Kay Petre, a female British motorsports superstar of the 1930s. It was this historical figure, and the sport altogether that inspired Temperley for her brand’s resort 2019 collection. There was an unapologetic delicacy to it, what with the frilly satin and lace cocktail dresses, silky pajama-like separates, and bohemian prints. The sporty element came in knitted sweaters designed with arrows of a racetrack. Despite the scarcity of masculine-to-feminine tropes, this was a powerful woman indeed. And she’s wearing a skirt too!
