Sonia Rykiel was one of those rare French designers who’s all about having fun. Who could ever forget her joyful runway shows where it was the only time, in the entirety of the fashion month, that the models were allowed to laugh, smile, and giggle? Today, creative director Julie de Libran seeks to continue this colorful and vivacious spirit through the brand’s spring 2019 show. This season, coinciding with the label’s 50th anniversary, de Libran focused on weekend wear and what fun girls wear when they’re not at work. what this looked like was swirls upon swirls of big, graphic and knitted stripes, draped and even falling from the body. Oversized net sweaters barely covered the bikinis underneath, while a flurry pristine white dresses were beautifully offset by big black leather belts. In a word, this show looked and felt comfortable, and if the models enjoyed wearing them on the runway, what more the girls on the street?
