There was a lot of shimmer, shine, and sparkle at Sies Marjan’s Fall 2019 show. Sander Lak was into romance this season but translated it in a way that’s both electric and subversive. There were still stereotypical tropes in the mix: lace, drapery, and glamour. But inserted was the exquisite tailoring with which this small but notable brand has become known for. Take into consideration the leather pantsuits—in either dark plum or deep navy blue—that were cut so precise they fit the bodies exceptionally well. Or one could even go for the softer satin variation, complete with a feathery scarf to add on the glamour with the softness. But this wouldn’t be a Sies Marjan show without a bit of irony. Coloring this satin and leather parade was a palette of neon that added a tinge of garishness to an otherwise polished collection. Arguably, it was a bit overdone, to the point that it downplayed the romanticism quite a bit. And while the beauty remained, one can’t help but feel that this line would have looked better without all the unnecessary vibrancy.
