It was only when Paul Andrew debuted his first ready-to-wear collection for Salvatore Ferragamo in 2017 that the Italian shoe label became a fashion phenomenon. Suddenly, their high-quality footwear was no longer the center of attention. It was a pretty high bar Andrew set for himself from Fall 2018, but the spring 2019 collection met it with ease. His sophisticated play on color continued, but while he worked on stark shades last fall, this season he’s into soft bubblegum pink, royal purple, and deep oceanic blue-green against waves of navy blues and khakis. One of the most surprising of the show was the fact that it was ageless, wherein pieces looked exceptional on runway veteran Stella Tennant as they did on current fashion it-girl Rianne Van Rompaey. The tailoring here was soft and lucious, as if the enigmatic textiles embraced the body with such smooth sensuality. Today, arguably no other Italian shoe brand has this much fashion power, and it will be interesting to see how Paul Andrew will be able to sustain the momentum and top yet another successful show.
