Designing for Roberto Cavalli is a tricky business. This brand requires the right amount of sex appeal and a uniquely sophisticated take on vulgarity. The label is up there within the ranks of Versace and Dolce & Gabbana in unapologetically allowing women to dress up as confidently sexy as they want. But today, sex is conveyed in totally different ways and these are the uphill challenges creative director Paul Surridge has to take. For spring 2019, he did so by encapsulating what it means for women to be sexy today, which resulted into a more mature and arguably more rigid look. In today’s Cavalli, the sexy Italian party girl is still dressed in off-the-shoulder cropped animal-printed cropped tops and sparkling t-shirt mini-dresses. Yet now, she’s also wearing mid-length pleated skirts and short-suits during the day. This is the type of sexy that Surridge if attempting to translate for the house of Cavalli. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen.
