Never underestimate Miuccia Prada power of subversiveness. Only she can take two totally different concepts, mash them all together, and turn them upside-down and inside-out. Yet while others’ attempts at such look confusing, hers make sense in the oddest of ways. Take her spring 2019 collection, for example. Here, she blended codes of classic ladylike dressing with sportswear sensibilities and a streetwear attitude. Biker shorts were made out of duchess satin (a common evening wear fabric), baby doll tops and dresses were worn over collared-up white shirts tucked in sweaters, and a few raincoats were transformed into cocktail dresses. There was also Miuccia’s signature schoolgirl elements, complete with pussycat bows and socks, this time in sparkling black sheer. One wouldn’t know if the look was mature or youthful, sexy or demure and that’s the genius of her designs. Dissecting her work is half the fun, and if Prada can force fashion folk to approach clothes in an intellectual way, then she’s achieved such a feat.
