For quite some time, British street label Palace and all-American company Polo Ralph Lauren have left us on our own to assume things taking place. Following Palace’s Instagram post of skater Lucien Clarke in the middle of the desert while clad in a yellow tracksuit, which is the brand’s way of teasing a collaboration, billboards signalling an upcoming collection from Palace x Polo Ralph Lauren were spotted in Tokyo. The two brands were suspiciously mum and soon enough, there were more speculations from fans after clues were found in London and Los Angeles. It was not until a planned Instagram post that things became official, and as if fans weren’t content with a confirmation, we already have a lookbook to spazz about in less than a month.
On Instagram, Polo Ralph Lauren accompanied a photo post with the caption, “Palace Ralph Lauren is a timeless collection that represents a love letter from a young London skateboard company to their favorite brand in the universe.” Palace mirrors the excitement as well, with its founders Gareth Skewis and Lev Tanju acknowledging being followers of the brand way before the collaboration even became a possibility.
This partnership is an addition to a series of already memorable Palace team-ups. Previously, the brand has worked with Adidas and Reebok in separate instances, with a uniform designed specifically for Angelique Kerber with the former. But those could not be described as that unlikely, especially when contrasted with Polo Ralph Lauren. Yet, we officially now have a lookbook that makes the collaboration more real. British photographer David Sims, whose resume includes work with i-D as well as labels Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto and Alexander McQueen, spearheaded the photoshoot in a desert.
Based on the release, what we will be clamoring to have are pieces that seamlessly fuse the aesthetics of the two brands, sportswear and Americana. Besides the more obvious representations of the logo in the horse and the car featured extensively in the lookbook, we also have reimagined polos and shirts, as well as preppier jackets and pants. This comes after we’ve seen fresh takes on the iconic pieces from Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary show during the New York Fashion Week. Who knew that the label would give us more? The garments were also colorful, especially when set against the desert, and these include pieces in plaid and in corduroy. The show stealer was undoubtedly the sweater that has the instantly recognizable Polo Bear, although this time around, the bear is doing a kickflip as it combines the themes of Palace and Polo Ralph Lauren.
If social media is proof enough, fans are crazy excited about the collaboration. Thankfully, the promise that it will be released not too long after the announcement is kept, with the two labels confirming that the pieces will be available on November 9, at 11 a.m. in Eastern Time. Keep your tabs ready though for palaceskateboards.com or come early at Palace’s brick and mortar stores; the collection is expected to sell immediately.
