If there ever was a combined men’s and women’s collection that highlighted the stark differences between how the two genders dress, it would be Phoebe English’s Spring 2019 offering. Usually, when a designer would be showing both collections at the same time, a common theme or element would make both look cohesive. But for this intellectual British designer, it’s surprisingly the very different approaches she took that made them all go well together. For the men’s, the looks are casual but well put together. The pieces are exceptionally tailored but a tad oversized to give the guys some comfort. There was even a stand-out tangerine-hued ensemble that’s sure to capture anyone’s eye. On the other hand, the women’s collection looked deconstructed and slightly complicated. Silks were draped and cut in various shapes while tulle was layered over white-shirts satin underwear. The looks were avant-garde in their presentation, but with close inspection, were actually easy to wear. All in all, there was an unmistakable youthful vibe that harmonized all the looks together, and such is the genius of Ms. Phoebe English.
