A girly tomboy seems to be a paradox that’s already commonplace in fashion. But while many designers look at it as a powerplay of gender tropes, none have captured a harmonious blend quite like Sophie Mechaly of Paul & Joe. Towing the gender lines isn’t new for this brand but for Pre-Fall 2019, Mechaly was able to mix both in one look with equal measure. A look will have the Paul & Joe woman wearing a masculinely tailored suit, but then it’s made out of shimmering duchess satin. And a frill-hemmed dress was layered with a slightly oversized knitted cardigan. The play on textures is also a huge part of the contrasting story that Mechaly is conveying this season. Knits paired with satins, denim layered over wool, and much more. As for the colors, Mechaly went as wild as she could, taking on sherbet shades of strawberry pink and sky blue as well as the more somber tones of boysenberry violet and midnight navy blue. Such contrasts made for more visually-appealing clothes, which will certainly translate to a lot of sales by the time these looks hit the stores next season!
