Oscar De La Renta was never really a fashion house for the youth. During the eponymous late designer’s tenure, the label took pride in the fact that they were one of few that held elegance to a high standard than anything else. And whilst that elegance is still present in the company today, under the leadership of Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, what was more evident was the shift in target market. Suddenly, the Oscar De La Renta girl wasn’t wearing a ball gown she inherited from her mother, but her own looks of draped scarf dresses, billowy caftans, and fringed-up cocktail dresses. These were sexy and beautiful clothes, which better fitted Studio 54 than Park Avenue. Although there were still a lot of grown-up and sophisticated elements the classic Oscar De La Renta client will still embrace, it’s clear that the new direction the brand is taking is more youthful, free, and a lot more fun.
