How many times have you expected perfection in a product only to be met with a huge disappointment? Some would say the key is to never expect any product to be perfect, while others believe it all boils down to the brand choice. In terms of watches, Nomos Glashütte has proven its worth as a credible and accountable German watch brand for more than two decades. And with its recent release of the Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Watch, which it claims to have perfect surfaces added with novel displays and steep curves, timepiece experts and enthusiasts can’t help but get curious about this new Neomatik watch.

The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Watch is a testament to the expansion of the timepiece brand from its traditional pieces to whole new world of watches, while keeping the signature simplistic look of Nomos timepieces. In partnership with Werner Aisslinger and Tina Bunyaprasit, the Autobahn was created for more than four years, until its launching during the first quarter of 2018.

The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Watch got the appearance down to a T, with its aesthetically pleasing surface and dial, which will satisfy every minimalist timepiece-loving soul out there. Likewise, the dial will caught attention of sport lovers, as it perfectly mimics a sports car’s dashboard speedometer, with cool luminescent striping and a highlight on the numbers 8, 10, 12, 2 and 4. It’s a wonder how Nomos was able to keep things looking neat, despite the successful incorporation of motorsports inspiration into the design.
The façade of the Autobahn Watch is a total charmer, yet the timepiece is also praised for what’s underneath—the next generation NOMOS automatic caliber Neomatik Date. Another major plus is the mechanical movement that enables the three-date feature of the watch, showing yesterday, today, and tomorrow’s dates. High-performance and accuracy are also strong suits of the movement, despite taking up just 3.6mm, allowing the sleek look of the slim and lightweight timepiece.
Despite its good points, the Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Watch fell short in terms of practicality and wearer’s experience, with complaints on the dial’s legibility and the slim hands that easily cause confusion. For some designs, the luminescent hand feature only applies to the hour hand, just making time-keeping hard for the wearer. The small window on the bottom part that shows the three-date feature doesn’t appeal to everyone as well, hinting that the simple and straightforward style may be an old trick, but a trick that works wonders, nonetheless.
