At some point in their careers, New York-based designers of ethnic origins will present a hybrid offering that combines the cosmopolitan sensibilities of their current clientele to the exotic cultures of their native lands. For resort 2019, it was Israeli designer Nili Lotan who went down this path, presenting a collection she entitled “The Wild Wild East.” But for this hybrid, she ventured into two of her origins, her birthplace of Israel and her early years in fashion working for Ralph Lauren. The result? A series of sophisticated cowgirl looks that’ll fit both the rodeos in Texas and the deserts of the Middle East. Full-on denim looks evoked a masculine feel that was undeniably powerful, but so did the suede jackets in fringe and the romantic loose blouses. Far from looking costume-y, these looks were impactful and beguiling, a lethal combination that Lotan has mastered after all these years.
