A few years ago, or maybe even during the brand’s heyday in the 80s and 90s, one would never have thought that Mugler would someday venture into sportswear. Well, it’s happened now with Casey Cadwallader’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection for the brand. But before anyone proclaims this as a travesty, there is a little bit of sense into the relative change. The way Thierry Mugler himself constructed his clothes was so that his array of supermodels at the time would be able to perform on the runway at their maximum capacities, theatricality-wise, that is. In the same vein, many sportswear pieces, or gear in technical terms, are constructed to give athletes as much agency as they need to perform at their very best in the competitions. See the correlation? If this still seems too much of a reach, maybe the fact that all the piece from this collection, albeit sportswear in nature, at all tailored to perfection. All the cuts are as precise as they can be, even the exaggerated silhouettes that more within Mugler’s vocabulary. the menswear pieces are also as well-cut, yet ironically, they’re more relaxed in shape and form. Maybe this is the new Mugler of the 21st century, but will it be accepted by old and new fans alike? Only time will tell.
