If there’s a brand that would know the value of humor in high fashion, it would be MM6 Maison Margiela. For Pre-Fall 2019, the design team behind this prominent sub-line ushered in new variations of the house’s most classic pieces. Their famous deep V-neck vareuse shape, for example, was reimagined here as a tuxedo tunic dress—perfect for an easy transition from day to night. The brand’s unorthodox yet subtle boxy tailoring was also on offer by way trench coats and long jackets. Colors-wise, the team kept it simple, playing with a base of navies, neutrals, and browns with surprise hints of plum, burgundy, a fiery shade of squash and gentle pops of banana and mustard yellow. The sense of humor came by the end: an eight-piece sub-collection with the garments spelling out “MARGIELA”. An elongated romper for A, black and white denim set for R, and so on and so forth. It was a clever take on logo-mania, and while only one wearing just one letter isn’t enough to proudly show off the brand, it’s the ingenious construction and the avant-garde touch that will let people know who you’re wearing!
