Martin Grant take on streetwear is not something that one would expect, especially at the climax of the trend. If other designers’ perspectives on it included sportswear elements and oversized pieces, Grant’s collections, particularly Resort 2019, incorporates soft tailoring and exquisite draping. Glamour was a huge starting point this season, as the designer referenced a lot of work-ready staples women in the 70s wore: pantsuits, wrap-dresses, and monochrome looks. Here, they were all on offer in such rich neutral tones, ready to make all sorts of impact in the office as well as on the street. Graphics came in stark stripes, both vertical and horizontal, that helped flatter and elongate the body to produce an infallible sophistication. The soft tailoring, on the other hand, was a nod to menswear, as a result of Grant’s male clients dipping into his womenswear offerings and vice versa. This collection is a far cry from the athleisure and sneaker culture the industry has been focused on, but this is still intrinsically streetwear. It’s just in the most glamorous and most sophisticated sense of the word.
