Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig can’t seem to find the right balance in their works. In their main Marchesa label, they often go overboard with the decorations and embellishments. But in their Marchesa Notte sub-line, such elements are way too scarce. The looks in the latter are too mediocre as compared to the former, whose ostentatious glamour overshadows just about everything else. Such is the situation for the sister label’s Fall 2019 line. Inspired by Christopher Beane‘s floral photography, the design duo relied too much on the nature-induced graphics instead of creating new dimensions in expressing such loveliness. We’re not even sure if those saturated images were actually painted on with watercolor or digitally-printed (let’s hope it’s the former!). Upon further inspection, we realized that in essence, these clothes, while beautiful, were just too plain to merit any enthusiasm. Go to a high school prom and you possibly might find more exciting frocks than this lot. However, as far as quality and craftsmanship are concerned, the label is still top-notch. When they learn to design within the level of their own dressmaking skills, then that’ll be a great collection indeed. For now, this was pleasant at best, mediocre at worst!
