In fashion, it’s all too common to see something and think of it as one thing, only to find out that it’s a whole different piece from another perspective. The fashion crowd got way more than their fair share of such at Maison Mihara Yasuhiro’s Fall 2019 Menswear show. What might look like an ordinary denim jacket was actually a hybrid of that and a striped shirt, creating the illusion of layers with just one piece. The same goes for their necktie accessories, which one might expect were just tied around the neck, but were actually sewn on the pieces together as well. It’s this sort of mish-mashing that Mihara Yasuhiro wanted to focus on this season. “I want to make something and give kind of a ‘junk’ feeling,” he shared. And while these clothes might look like junk, they’re far from it. The idea of illusions has always been difficult for designers to maneuver, especially those within the streetwear movement. But here, Yasuhiro proved that his eye for design is way more advanced than his contemporaries as it’s difficult to encapsulate the collection with just one word nor one idea. Is this beautiful or ugly? Is it desirable or is it basically just, as the designer himself put it, junk? And that’s the beauty of it! The almost impossibility of defining this line is what will have customers and critics remembering it for many years to come. It’s not Maison Mihara Yasuhiro’s best line—far from it—but the effort and intelligence put into it are staggering!
