“Down with the man!” That’s what designer Raul Lopez essentially did with his latest collection for Luar. For Fall 2019, he took on the traditional suit—sharp cuts, pinstripes, and all—and turned it on its head. Some, even literally! Think grey check trousers paneled with chocolate brown suede that swivels about as the wearer walks the street (or in this case, the runway). A seemingly standard suit made in denim with exaggerated flares flapping about. An oversized 80s-esque pinstriped jacket worn as a dress and held together by a long orange strap-like piece. These twists were fascinating enough, but they did little to the imagination of the customers. Despite the interesting techniques and such, most of what we saw were unwearable. And while avant-garde is still a thing, when playing with a suit, we expected garments that people can wear in their everyday lives. But this wasn’t the case. They were reworked and all, but they weren’t wearable at all. And what good are your creative spins if other people can’t enjoy them as much?
