Virgil Abloh is all about the zeitgeist of his time, which really came through in his first menswear collection for Louis Vuitton. Being the first African-American designer to helm such a prestigious house, it was clear what his message would be: diversity. For spring 2019, his vision of diversity was a coming-together of different colors—representative of various ethnicities, genders, religions, etc—and realizing that we’re all the same. He likened this to how a white light touches a prism to form different colors—something that was literally shown on the runway. The show began with an all-white parade of well-tailored streetwear looks, each brighter than the next. As it went on, color began to dominate, whether in vivid monochrome looks or striking color-blocking. The leather goods, the brand’s main focus, were also there painted in bright hues and made more personal. Instead of purses and bags held away from the body, they were worn with harnesses and holsters. This was a fashion moment people have waited for. and it’s safe to say that it exceeded all expectations.
