Designer Junichi Abe proposed “normal elegance” on his Fall 2019 Menswear collection for Kolor. The elegance here is not the clothes themselves, per se, but rather how luxurious fabrics can work for everyday clothing as well. Just because a designer has quality wool doesn’t mean he/she has to cut it into a well-tailored suit. Here, Abe constructed an array of separates—some even deconstructed—that are as normal as clothes can get, which more or less puts them into the streetwear category. A beautiful check material, for instance, was made into an oversized hoodie that can tickle the fancy of even Vetements fans. A series of knits, on the other hand, had colorful patterns all over them to convey a sense of playfulness within a potentially posh aesthetic. It’s the play of contrasts that make this offering interesting, but in terms of desirability, it’s a whole other animal entirely. As well-crafted as this line is, it barely stands out from other streetwear labels that are also into deconstruction and oversized garments. In the next few seasons, Abe has to come up with something completely fresh to make an indelible stamp in the fashion world today!
