Can sportswear be glamorous? According to Kiko Kostadinov, it can be. For his label’s first womenswear offering, the brand hired Central Saint Martins alumni Deanna and Laura Fanning as creative directors. Although they have different expertise, the twin sisters were still able to come up with a collection that’s in-line with Kostadinov’s brand, yet slightly different to what’s normally offered in his menswear line. For spring 2019, the put forth a hybrid of classic sportswear elements with touches of old-school glamour, all within a futuristic sportswear vibe. Some looks referenced the classic 1982 film Blade Runner, particularly the armor-like pieces in vibrant colors. The silhouettes, on the other hand, evoked the spirit of MGM, one of the most grandiose film studios during Hollywood’s Golden Era in the 1930s and 1940s. The wide-shouldered yet nipped-waisted shapes looked inspired by the likes of legendary actresses Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo, style icons of that time that still inspires designers this day. And yet, with all these references, there was also a sportswear aesthetic that was still present in the collection. This was the kind of glamour that’s more 2019 instead of 1939.
